This book investigates future technologies that will impact the world.

Several months ago, while I was sitting in a small teahouse, not far from my house in Chennai, waiting for my tea, I overheard two college-going youngsters discussing something called "quantum computers. One of them replied, "Machines will soon be thinking faster than you and I, da. The other laughed and replied, "Enna, are we to become useless then? Those were the words I would carry with me. Honestly, that's the question that we're asking today, isn't it? The world of technology is advancing at a speed such that it seems like we are living in a science fiction movie, but it's a reality.

Let's discuss some technologies for the future, which are going to transform our lives, work and thinking. No jargon loaded and no confusing terminology. Simple and friendly explanations, such as I'm giving you here about a cup of filter coffee.

Today, AI is more intuitive than ever and now understands us better than ever before.

AI is in use – for example, every day you might use it without realising it. That's AI at work when YouTube recommends a video you're interested in, or Google maps shows you which road to take has fewer cars. AI will be far more intelligent in the future, however. They will pick up on feelings, tone of voice and even the culture. Suppose you have an artificial intelligence to perfect the art of Tanglish, who changes the language half way through the sentence, and can still crack the joke. That isn't so far away now.

This will enable pupils to learn more effectively, doctors to diagnose faster and small business owners to run their businesses without having to hire a large workforce. The bad news: you may have to change jobs. The good news: you may have a lot more time to devote to creative and meaningful work.

Well, you might be thinking this. Self driving cars in Chennai Traffic? If there are cows casually crossing the road and lanes that are being cut by cars? At the moment, it just seems impossible. But technological firms are making a concerted effort on the vehicles that will be able to deal with even the most unpredictable and chaotic traffic, not clean highways in other countries.

Autonomous delivery vehicles and buses, perhaps even taxis, will be seen on the roads in the next few years but only for a limited and controlled use. This will help to minimise accidents which are caused by tiredness or distraction by human beings and also assist people who are not able to drive owing to some disability or old age to travel freely and independently.

1. Renewable Energy that works for All.

So, each summer we all say our complaint about the current just going off right? The future of energy technology is attempting to rectify just that issue. Solar panels are not only going lower in price, they are also more efficient and new battery technology means homes now can store electricity for use during a power outage or at night.

Those villages that don't have any proper electricity service can now have the power that is provided directly from the sun, not waiting for any big government projects to reach them. This isn't merely a plea to the environment though of course that is important as well. It's about providing simple comfort and dignity to millions of people that still have to manage with sporadic electricity.

2.Health Care to Your Village, Not Your City

My grandmother used to have to come to see a good doctor for a simple check-up and it was four hours by car. A struggle such as this could well be a tale our children will tell us that they do not believe. Using AI diagnosis, health wearable devices and telemedicine, a small town or village resident will be able to receive top-notch medical advice without making a long journey.

Soon you may have a device on your wrist which can inform you of issues at the heart, a sugar level increase or possibly even early indications of stress – even before things get serious. This is a future tech that truly seems like life-saving, rather than convenient.

Virtual and Augmented Reality for Learning.

Don't forget how tedious the memorisation of dates in history or the diagrams in biology exams were.Don't forget the days of memorising history dates or cramming biology diagrams. Students could not only read about the human heart in a book but be taken inside as well, or walk through ancient Rome, as future classrooms can do so through virtual reality.

Not only fun but it helps the student to understand, remember things much better. Even training skills for careers such as electrician work, cooking or machine repair work can be done safely by using simulations in place of doing it in the real world.

Should we be excited...or...should we be worried?

Well, just a little of both is okay. All large technological advancements have been frightening at first, followed by exciting.All great pieces of technology from electricity to internet have started off with fear, but then excitement. It's the way that these tools are used that's important. Technologies are neither good nor bad, they are what their hands are in.

Returning to the tea shop, these two college students, I feel like saying to them "Yes, machines will get smarter, but "f-feeling" will always be uniquely human, and "f-creating", and "f-caring". The future is not the taking the place of man by robots. It's a matter of using technology to enable us to be better, more capable individuals.
